Students with disabilities, ages 3-21.
Adapted physical education programs are those that have the same objectives as the regular physical education program, but in which adjacent (adaptation/modifications) are made in the regular physical education curriculum to meet the needs of exceptional students with disabilities.
Students who are receiving adapted physical education services in the transitional programs (18-21) would receive instruction in learning lifetime recreational and leisure activities in the community (YMCA, recreational centers, parks, etc.)
Direct services: The actual hands on instruction of activities with the student (s) based on the units of instruction in the regular physical education setting. It can also include showing how to adapt and modify given activities, rules, and equipment.
Consult Services: Communication of information between the adapted physical education staff, regular physical education staff, teachers, and program assistants on the given physical education activities being presented.
Assess and evaluate students for possible future programming.
Develop individualized programs based on observation, assessments, evaluations, and child's abilities.
Encourage social interactions between the student, his/her peers, and the regular physical education staff.
Pupil Personnel
Services, inclusion facilitators, regular physical education staff,
and/or school nurse completes and reviews Screening Form #5-87 along
with determining if an adapted physical education evaluation should
take place. If so, an adapted physical education referral packet
is completed by the person who completed Form #5-87. Adapted
physical education staff completes a gross motor evaluation after
receiving the referral packet. An MDC is held and IEP is written
if appropriate.
